Awakening

This is a very significant work for me in that it demonstrated that after a long absence from  sculpting, I could still capture the essence of the gesture and passion of the live model’s pose.  Since the model was reclining on pillows and a support of 4 steps, the challenge was to sculpt the back of the model without actually seeing it as well as deciding how the model would be able to support herself with the 4 steps not a part of the finished work.  This was accomplished by using the model’s left arm as an anchor point.

The title expounds on the pose which connotes 3 increasing levels of awareness.  The first is awakening from sleep to active life.  The second is the awakening of a women’ sensual power; and thirdly - perhaps the most important, is women’ awakening of their collective, feminine power for good in the world.

2013, Bronze, 15x14x13, Edition: 10
